The value of gold follows a simple calculation: fineness × weight × the current gold price. The hallmark on jewellery indicates its fineness. The most common marks are:

• 333 gold (8 carat): 33.3% pure gold, often found in older fashion jewellery.
• 585 gold (14 carat): 58.5% pure gold, the most common fineness for gold rings and necklaces.
• 750 gold (18 carat): 75% pure gold, a high-quality jewellery standard.
• 916 / 22 carat: Turkish gold and many bullion coins.
• White gold: the same value as yellow gold, because colour does not change the fineness.

For Silver buying too, fineness determines the value. Solid silver carries marks such as 800, 835, 925 or 999. Traditional Silver cutlery is usually 800 silver or 835 silver, while jewellery and Byzantine chains are often 925 sterling silver.
