Krugerrand: 22 carat and exactly one ounce of fine gold

The Krugerrand has been minted in South Africa since 1967 and was the first gold coin specifically aimed at private investors. Paul Kruger appears on the obverse and a springbok on the reverse. It remains one of the world's best-selling bullion coins.

The one-ounce coin is 916.7 gold, or 22 carat, and contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold. Its copper content gives it a gross weight of 33.93 grams and a slightly reddish colour. Half-, quarter- and tenth-ounce versions have the same fineness.

The Krugerrand has no stamped face value, but it is legal tender in South Africa. Its price follows gold entirely. Collector premiums arise only for rare years or special proof issues.

The table below shows what your coins bring today. For several coins or mixed sizes, pick the Krugerrand in the gold calculator and enter the number of coins.

Selling a Krugerrand in Nordhorn: price, testing and process

Inherited, bought as an investment or received as a gift: here you can read how the buying price of a Krugerrand is calculated, how we test the coin and how selling works at our shop in Nordhorn.

How is the Krugerrand price calculated?

What counts is the fine gold the coin contains, not its weight on the scale. A one-ounce coin weighs 33.93 grams, of which 31.1 grams are pure gold and the rest copper. We value this fine gold at the current market price in euros and pay 97 % of that for every size.

The gold price is quoted per troy ounce on the market, that is per 31.1035 grams, and converted into a price per gram for buying. Read more in our glossary under Troy ounce and Spot price.

Payout, ID and tax when selling a Krugerrand

We tell you the amount before you decide. Once you accept, we pay out in cash immediately or start the bank transfer straight away; on a Dutch account the money usually arrives immediately or within one working day.

We only need ID if we pay out 2,000 euros or more in cash. In that case, Germany's Anti-Money Laundering Act requires a valid ID card or passport. The exact rule is explained in our glossary under ID requirement.

Whether the gain from the sale is tax-free and what applies to inherited coins is explained in our glossary under Selling gold and tax.

Condition, capsule and authenticity

You do not need a capsule, certificate or original packaging, though they do no harm. Scratches and handling marks do not reduce a bullion coin's value, because payment is for its fine gold content.

We check diameter, thickness and weight because counterfeit Krugerrands are in circulation and can be reliably identified this way. If in doubt, we also measure the fineness non-destructively with our X-ray fluorescence instrument.

For rare years and special proof issues, we also assess the collector value and pay you the higher amount.

Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and other gold coins

The calculation is the same for every bullion coin: fine gold content times today's price. Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic are made of 999.9 fine gold, the Krugerrand of 22 carat gold; as one-ounce coins, all three contain the same amount of gold, one troy ounce.

We pay 97 % of the material value for all gold coins, including Sovereign, Vreneli and 20 Mark. Read more under Sell coins and Sell ducats. The same rate applies to bars, see Sell gold bars.

The Krugerrand also exists in silver. We buy silver coins at the silver price, paying 85 % of the material value; read more under Sell silver coins.

Whether a bank buys back a Krugerrand, and at what price, is up to each bank; it is best to ask there directly, especially if you bought the coin there. At our shop in Nordhorn we test and weigh your Krugerrand in front of you and pay 97 % of the material value, without an appointment and immediately in cash or by bank transfer if you wish.

Exactly one troy ounce, or 31.1035 grams of pure gold. Because of the copper content, the coin weighs 33.93 grams in total and has a fineness of 916.7.

Not if more than a year passes between the purchase and your sale: the gain is then tax-free for private individuals in Germany (Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act), and for inherited or gifted coins the clock starts with the previous owner's purchase. What applies to an earlier sale is explained in our glossary. If you are taxable in another country, its rules apply. This is not tax advice. More on the tax holding period

As many as you like, we have no maximum. We only need ID if we pay out 2,000 euros or more in cash. In that case, Germany's Anti-Money Laundering Act requires a valid ID card or passport. For larger lots, it is best to let us know shortly in advance so that enough cash is ready. More on ID and reporting

No. Bullion coins are valued for their fine gold content. Condition matters only for rare years and collector grades.
