How can I tell if it is platinum?
Platinum and white gold look very similar. Four features help you tell them apart:
- The stamp: platinum carries marks such as 950, Pt 950, 950 Plat or PLAT, white gold the gold stamps 585 or 750.
- The weight: 950 platinum has a density of around 20 g/cm³, most 14 and 9 carat white gold alloys about 12.7 g/cm³. A platinum ring is therefore about one and a half times as heavy as one of the same size in 585 white gold.
- The colour: white gold is usually rhodium plated. Once the rhodium wears off, it shows a slightly yellowish tone. Platinum is naturally white and stays that way.
- The measurement: only testing the material gives certainty. We measure with our X-ray fluorescence analyser, non-destructively and in front of you. The device reads the surface, and a rhodium layer can affect the result; that is why the stamp and the weight count too.
